How to Prepare Your Quilt for Quilting
The three layers of your quilt will be loaded separately of one another.
Do not pin or baste the layers or attach the binding ahead of time
If your quilt top and/or backing have a definite 'top edge' be sure to safety pin a note indicating that.
If your backing fabric has a directional print or special blocks or labels please make sure to safety pin a note to that effect.
Do not attach any buttons, beads, plastic or metal pieces, or leave any pins in your top or bottom/backing.
Stay stitch (1/4") around the edge of your top, especially if it is pieced to the edge or you notice the fabric fraying.
Quilt Top
Iron your top and make sure seams are well pressed. This is an important step in the process of turning out a flat quilt, so take your time. If I need to press the quilt top and/or the backing it is a $10.00 charge for each.
Cut loose threads, both front and back. These can show through, cause snags and uneven stitching. I charge $5.00 if I need to trim them for you.
If you want curved corners, please wait to cut the curves after the quilting is finished.
Borders that do not lay flat may cause tucks, pleats or fullness so make sure that it is flat and square.
Backing
If sending batting and backing, please leave at least eight inches longer and eight inches wider than your quilt top. If your quilt top is 60” x 80”, the batting and backing should measure 68” x 88”.
If you want to seam your own backing, please make sure it is trimmed even and straight on all edges, and that the seams are pressed open. Make sure you cut the selvages off the seam allowances that are inside the quilt, because they can pull the backing unevenly and cause puckers during the quilting process (the best way to do this is to leave them on till after sewing the seam - sew the seam 1/4" inside the selvage and trim the selvage after seaming) Selvage can be left on the outer edges as it makes a very stable edge and will be trimmed off later.
Bed sheets may not be suitable because of their high thread count.
If you want me to seam and square the backing make sure and leave extra length and width so I can trim it square. Prices are $10.00 to seam the backing, plus an additional $5.00 to square backing fabric once prepared.
I have 96" and 115" wide bleached muslin at a reasonable price if you wish to purchase from The Quilters Touch.
Batting
If you send batting, please check the package to be sure it is suitable for machine quilting.
Battings have recommended quilt stitch spacing. Please choose the appropriate batting for the size and type of design.
You do not need to send batting for any of the services. We offer cotton, wool, poly and cotton/poly blends if you wish to purchase from The Quilters Touch.
Extra charges may be added for quilt preparation that must be completed by The Quilters Touch
